Modernism in architecture also linked with the contemporary style emerged back in the late 19th century through the mid 20th century. Modernism was based on the rejection of ornamentation where this absence of ornament was considered an ornament itself self-creating what we now know as modernism. It was not only the ornamental aspect of a structure that defined its modernism but also the materials it's constructed from; materials such as glass, steel, and reinforced concrete are the base to most of modern structures. Two of the biggest designers of this style were Gaudí and Mies Van der Rohe.

Mies Van der Rohe is a German architect based in Chicago, which is known for being one of the pioneers of modernism. Mies style was described as a functional industrial, avoiding closed spaces and using as much glass as he could to create transparency between the exterior and the interior. Nonetheless, Mies was also the person who said the famous ”Less is more” phrase which just reinforces his conception for minimalism and simplicity.

On the other hand, with have what's called Contemporary Architecture that despite having a very similar concept they're completely different things. While Modernism was based on new and innovative ways of construction, contemporary is more of a mix of different styles and takes a lot in consideration of its time's trends. A pioneer and great example of contemporary architecture is Antoni Gaudí, a Catalán architect whose projects were inspired and influenced by nature. Gaudí’s work is recognized worldwide and it’s one of best tourist spots in Europe.

In conclusion, both Mies Van der Rohe and Antoni Gaudí are a good representation of modernism despite how different they are. It just comes to show that modernism isn’t just one style but that it’s thinking outside the box and choosing to do something different. Breaking with tradition in every shape and form and create a different style.
